2009 DAIRY
hI THIS IS A NEW PAGE INFORMING YOU ABOUT HOW MY BREEDING SEASON IS GOING IN 2009.
I paired my lizards up on the 20/3/09. i put 10 pairs of lizard down this is more than i would normal put doen but want to try and improve my over all quality.
i intend to pair a few cocks to more thasn one hen.
i plan to pair my classic winner to at lest two hens, i like to do this as it creats a quick family line with the ability to pair half brotyher and half sisters toegther next year.
26/3 well they have started farily well as i have 4 pairs building already.
27/3 I have been comntact by London Zoo to ask if i could help out English hertiage with an aviary project they are working on a Kenilworth castle in warwickshire. for more information on this project go to the Kenilworth castle page on this website.
27/3/09 -first pair laid today
4/4/09 go 7 pairs of lizard down on eggs now.
5/4/ looks like got two hen toegther [agasin] it's not the first time nad probably won't be the last. Oh well another hen to pair a cock bird to.
14/4/09 firdt pair hatched today, always a joy to see the first chick hatch.
17/04/09 got 4 pairs with youngters now. but my classic cocks first round was clear. I have been feeding a large amount of Danlion leaves. which i thinlk help the bird when they are rearing youngesters.
25/04/09 have rung 17 young lizards have lost a few at a few days. also have had a few pairs with clear eggs.
28/4/09 seem so be going ok but my classic winners first round were clear, she is sitting again as I switched her eggs under another pair.
30/04/09 I have taken the first chicks away today so finger crossed they will be OK.
7/5/09 I now got 14 young birds weaned and have started to hang the show cages on the stock cages.
10/5/09 Have started to colour feed carphyill red in the water today. the birds are looking very good and feeding well have started to put some soaked seed into a separt dish.
14/05/09 have also put a dish of conditioning seed into the stock cages now.
16/05/09 Started to give pigeon tonic inthe dinker today. I will explain why, The tonic contains a high persentage of iron of sulphate which is said to help fix the colour in the birds. So i will give them it once a week until the end of the moult.
20/05/09 started to give baths today and will try to give them on a regular basics from now on.
29/5/09 at last i have hatched 2 from my 2008 classic winner. It's strange but John record won it 2007 and never bred from his classic winner, and in 2006 Dave Ross won the classic and until this year he had bred from his classic winner. So i have broke the classic curse!!! Well i hope I have. But i have also put my classic winner with a second hen.
1/6/09 the second round seems to be going well now got a few nest due off in the next few day so fingers crossed.
4/6/09 I have currently got 26 chicks in the nest from the second round and 14 on the sticks from the first round, with still 3 pairs sitting on eggs. I am on holiday from work this week so hope to get alot done in the bird room this week.
5/6/09 Started to put youngsters into Lizard show cages to train for shows, I have a young stock show this coming saturday so i want to put a few out thier as I think tihs exellant trianing for your young birds.
6/6/09 Have not had much luck with my lancashires this year as I now have only one pair left, but they have just hatch one today so hopefully it will not all be in vain. But having a good season with my Lizards can't hve everything!
11/06/09 Visited Kenilworth castle today to ring the young lizard canaries they have. i was highly delighted to find that all four hens have built nests and 2 hens have chicks. read more about this on the kenilworth castle page on this site.
13/06/09 have just put my Lizard out at a canary nest feather show I put 9 Lizards out and another member benched 3 this was more than all the other varieties put toegther. I liked to use these shows a training for my Lizards as this gets them used to the show enviroment. Over the last week have been putting my young lizards in show cages for a few hours at a time. { I had a weeks annual leave last week which gave me the extra time to do this] I will continue to do this over the next few weeks putting them in show cages before I go to work and returning them when I come home, this will get them to feel at home in a show cage.
15/06/09 I have just put my 45th ring on my Lizards and I still have 3 nests of 4 to hatch, so If I get more than 5 from these I may have to send for more rings, that will be the third lot. Or will I leave them with no closed ring?
17/06/09 Well I am trying to keep my young lizard vin single cages but this isn't going to be possible with me have such a good season looks as though 'i willhave to keep some in 2 or 3's. Some of the first round youngsters are starting to take on some colour.

19/06/09 have just had another 3 hatch out from my classic winner from another hen, his orginal hen is looking to go down for another round I think i will let her as I have only got 2 from this hen.
22/06/09 Started to put baths on the from of the stock cages, but don't really have enough, so i think i will have to invest in some more, as it mean putting them on one cage in the morning and change them in the afternoon for another cage which is very time consuming. seem to be getting through soaked seed like mad. this probably because I also use it as green's [see article on this on my website]
24/06/09 I have been having a look at some of my youngster in detail over the last few days and I am hopefully that i maybe able to show a stam at the world show, seen as i have had a good breeding season. but still along way to go yet!!
As My old mate the late Stan Insall used to say you only need one to win!
28/06/09 I have now started to put baths on the stock cages daily, but as i have so many youngsters this year i don't have enough baths, so i am spraying some of the youngsters which are in ther small single cages.
30/6/09 I have now split-up most of my pairs have just got 4 pairs left one has just hatched the orthers will be another week or so.
5/07/09 I look as though i have bred my first non cap of 2009, I always find asome thing special about a non cap. have been looking at some of my youngsters and i have a few clear caps that might make up a stam for the world show [finger crossed but thier is still along way to go yet.
8/07/09 have got7 chicks in the nest nowe with one more pair due off in the next couple of days. I am putting 6 or 7 youngsters into show cages every morning and leaving them all day. this I feel is great for staeding them down for the show bench. because the longer they spend in the show cage before they are shown the steadier they will be, and as i have said many times before a steady bird is much easier to judge.
10/07/09 the last pair of Lizards have hatched off today. my first young stock show odf the season tommorrow.
12/07/09 Showed at a local CBS yesterday, at thier young stock show, and believe it or not there was more Lizard canaries than any other variety of canary, 20 Lizards. I did take best lizard and best AOV canary[ with my lizard] and was second best bird in show. best canary was a lovely 3 parts dark border canary.
14/07/09 put my last ring on today so the last few will be unrung. I was looking closley at some of my birds I have bred this year and i think my second round chicks are of a better quality than my first rounders! But they still have alot of growing to do and they have got to moult out yet so we will see.
18/07/09 Looks like i will finish-up with 53 Lizards, but have only managed 1 lancashire and that it a plainhead.
Well cages are getting full now so have got some in pairs in single cages. Now just have to wait and see how the moult out!
21/07/09 Well have confirmed that one of my last young lizards still in the nest is a Non cap, that is the only one i have bred this season, I never bred one atall last year.
25/07/09 Big problem!! have had an accident at work and my foot is in plaster can't get down the birds. Have had give traxcy & Kayleigh instruct > Going on holiday Next weekend???
26/07/09 better news out of plaster, nothing broken just torn ligements in my ankle, so have a protective boot on, the call it a
" Beckham BOOT" I call it a Wilkinson Boot!! As you will know I am not keen on football but a big Rugby fan so the qwilkinson Boot itis. Anyway at least i can get down to do the birds although it takes me a bit longer. Anyway birdroom full of feathers and there are a few that I like the look of.
27/07/09 I have booked to go to the world show in Portugal, Soy i will be able to see my birds and hopefully pick up a medal now wouldn't that be nice> Tracy and kayleigh will be coming to so I will have to behave myself?
1/09/09 SORRY no reports latley been very busy, been on holiday and just haven't had time to put anything on the site.#
well here is an update: birds seem to be well into the moult the first few are starting to come through the moult now seem to have more Golds than silvers which is unusal. there are one or two that look promising but time will tell.
have my first major show on the 17th of this month hopefully will be able to put a nice team out. One point to mension if you could put a few of those clean feathers in a envlope and send them to me, I can forward them on to the Canary Council who can get money for them, so put them to some good send them to me!
